Jenkins Master Brush Set contains 11 Jenkins brushes.

Round Brush
This brush is made of quality Kolinsky sable hair. It is similar in shape to the Skript Liner, only the hairs are shorter. It is also shaped to a very sharp and precise point. This brush is used for painting detail such as long stamens in flowers, tiny accents in flowers, leaves and ferns, facial features in people, animals and birds. The Round Brush is also used for fish and feathers on small birds and details in landscapes. It is also a good brush to add your signature to your finished painting.

Skript Liner
The Skript Liner is made of very good quality Kolinsky sable hair. It is sometimes referred to as a liner brush. It has long hairs and comes to a very precise, fine tapered point. This brush is shaped perfectly to be used when painting long grasses, tree branches and twigs etc. The hairs are soft and have just the right amount of spring to them.

Filbert Brush 3/8 inch
The Filbert Brush is made of synthetic hair. This is basically an oval shape brush with a rounded end, similar to a cats tongue. It is helpful to have the smaller Filbert Brush when painting on smaller size canvasses. Many small leaves and ferns, and flowers as well as bird feathers can be painted using this brush.

Filbert Brush ½ inch
The Filbert brush is made of synthetic hair and shaped the same as the Filbert Brush 3/8 inch. The rounded profile is very helpful when painting small cluster or wild flowers, Daisies, Chrysanthemum petals, Geraniums, Sunflowers etc. This type of brush is also used when painting the large Exotic Bird Feathers. Leaves and ferns can also be painted with the Filbert.

Flat Brush ¼ inch
Made of synthetic hair this brush is perfect for many small objects where you need to get detail. This small Flat Brush is helpful when painting on very small canvasses. This brush works very well for portrait painting, very small flowers and leaves and detail in landscapes.

Flat Brush 5/8 inch
This Flat Brush has the same shape and characteristics as the Flat Brush ¾ inch. The brush is made of synthetic hair and is extremely useful when painting flowers on smaller canvasses. It also works well when painting landscaped and seascapes. It is always a good idea to include several different sizes of Flats into your brush collection.

Flat Brush ¾ inch
This is the most common shape and size brush used for the Jenkins style. It is made of synthetic hair and is squared off at the ends and come to a very sharp chisel edge. This brush is used mainly for the large flowers, such as Roses, Poppies, Lilies etc. Many different leaves are also painted using the Flat Brush. It is also sometimes used for oil painted backgrounds.

Mop Blender
This flat, round and fluffy brush is made from very soft, white goat hair. This brush is used often when painting the Jenkins style. The most common uses are blending colors of a background into one another, softening of flower petals and blending objects to achieve softness. One technique called ?lost and found edges? can add depth and drama to your painting by blending some of the edges out-of-focus.

Background Brush Bristle 1 inch & Background Brush Bristle 3/4 inch
It is a good idea not to use your good oil paint brushes for the acrylic paints. These brushes are made from natural white bristle. These bristle brushes were designed especially for applying acrylics. When painting the Jenkins style, these two brushes are used mainly when painting the abstract acrylic backgrounds and acrylic color washes.

Flat Brush 1 inch
This brush is made of synthetic hair and is shaped like the other Flat Brushes. This is an excellent brush when painting on very large canvasses. The large size is ideal because it holds a lot of oil paint and covers a large surface in a short amount of time. When painting the Jenkins Style, this brush is used mainly for oil painted backgrounds. It is a very good brush for painting loose, large painterly strokes of color.

Brushes and their uses

With regard to brushes, consider the brush as a tool; if a brush is not properly constructed and is not made of superior materials, it can not possibly be used for proper application of paint. Your brushes must work with you, not against you. They are one of your most important tools.
The brushes for the Jenkins Technique should come to very sharp chisels or points. The chiseled ends help to achieve the crisp edges, such as those found on flowers and leaves. When painting the Jenkins Style, bristle brushes are used only to apply the acrylic background. The Jenkins synthetic brushes are heat treated in an oven for a specific amount of time. This extra, special step in the manufacturing process is done to help the brushes keep their shape over their lifetime. A blend of different hair diameters is used to optimize the performance. The synthetic brushes are just a little bit soft and have a spring to them. If brushes are too soft, they will get limp when oil paint and medium are added to them. If a brush is too stiff, it will scratch across the surface and actually pull the oil paint off.

Brush Care, Cleaning and Conditioning

Take good care of your brushes
If taken care of properly, they will last and perform well for a long time. It is very important that you clean and condition your brushes after every use.
For the oil painting brushes:
Rinse your brushes very well in clean, odorless thinner, until all the paint is removed. Repeat this step several times, then blot on an old towel or on paper towels. When you think you have all the paint out of the brushes, arrange them neatly on a dry clean towel and allow them to dry completely.
Conditioning brushes:
Once the brushes are cleaned and dried, it is a good idea to apply a little oil to the brush, such as baby oil or plain linseed oil. If available, a commercial brush conditioning oil can be used. The oil can be used on the synthetic and sable brushes. Dip the brushes in a little oil and work it through the hairs with your fingers. If you see a little oil paint color still in the brush, rinse the brush again in the thinner, dry it and re-apply the oil or conditioner. Shape the brush back to its original chisel or point while adding the conditioner. If a tiny particle of paint is left in a brush, especially near the ferule (metal part) of the brush, once it has dried, it can cause the flat chisel ends or the pointed ends to split apart. This will ultimately ruin the brush for its intended purpose. If using a brush container, always store your brushes upright, never with the hairs facing down.

Note: Do not use any brush conditioner or baby oil on the bristle or Mop Blender brushes. The Mop Blender only needs to be cleaned well in odorless thinner, then fluffed on a paper towel and allowed to dry.
For the acrylic bristle brushes:
Rinse them very well in plain water immediately after using the acrylic paint. Never allow the acrylic paint to dry in the brush.
